Caroline’s Cart and accessibility for individuals with special needs while shopping in store
“Find your people. Find people who do what you do everyday. I’ve got great friends that I’ve had for a long time. They don’t have special needs kids. I love them. We will forever be friends. They don’t have any idea what I do on a daily basis. I’m in so many different groups of special needs families that I understand, that walk it, that live it – day in and day out. That has been a great source of comfort for me. So my advice is when you find out what you have, find those people.”
Drew Ann Long struggled when shopping with her daughter Caroline because of the difficulty of maneuvering the child’s wheelchair along with a shopping cart. To address this problem – a common one for families of children with special health care needs – she created Caroline’s Cart, an accessible shopping cart that could be used by individuals with disabilities so they could continue having a positive experience when shopping with their family.
In this episode, Anchor Hannah Wilson and Mrs. Long chat about the journey that led to the invention of Caroline’s Cart and the founding of Caroline’s Cause for the siblings of children with special needs.
